Warning issued to WhatsApp users over account takeover scam

Action Fraud has received over 60 reports of a WhatsApp scam that involves stealing access to users' accounts.

The scam begins when a criminal gains access to another WhatsApp account, and poses as a friend or group member to start a conversation with you.

They will then ask you to send them a six-digit code that you received from WhatsApp, claiming that it was sent to you by accident.

Once they have this code, they can use it to login to your WhatsApp account and lock you out. The criminal will then use the same tactic to target your contacts and steal more accounts.

To protect yourself, set up two-step verification, always confirm unusual requests by calling the person directly, and never share your activation code.

You can also report spam messages or block a sender within WhatsApp. If you have been a victim of this scam, report it to Action Fraud or call 0300 123 2040.
