Saint George's Day in England - 23rd April 2024

Saint George is the patron saint of England in a tradition established in the Tudor period, based in the saint's popularity during the times of the Crusades and the Hundred Years' War.

Veneration of the saint in folk religion declined in the 18th century. Attempts to revive the celebration of Saint George's Day (23 April) as an expression of English culture and identity date from the foundation of Royal Society of St. George in 1894.
Since the beginning of the 2010s, such efforts have resulted in St George's Day celebrations with aspects of a national holiday in England.
 
Religious observance of St George's Day changes when it is too close to Easter. According to the Church of England's calendar, when St George's Day falls between Palm Sunday and the Second Sunday of Easter inclusive, it is moved to the Monday after the Second Sunday of Easter. In 2011, for example, 23 April was Holy Saturday, so St George's Day was moved to Monday 2 May, and in 2014 it was celebrated on Monday 28 April. The Roman Catholic Church in England and Wales has a similar practice.
 
A traditional custom on St George's day is to wear a red rose in one's lapel, though this is no longer widely practised.
 
St. George's Day Parade. One of the best ways to celebrate St. George's Day is to watch the parade, which is held in central London, starting from Trafalgar Square, and ending at the historic Guildhall. It features marching bands, traditional English dancers, and even knights in armour. St George is also the patron saint of Scouts.

Council waives road closure fees ahead of Coronation

There were 120 street parties for the Platinum Jubilee in Bexley borough.  The Council have set out clear information regarding road closures.

Bexley is supporting residents who wish to organise street parties to celebrate the Coronation of His Majesty The King by waiving its fees for road closures. 

The Council is helping with requests for parties free of charge and party organisers will not be charged the fees relating to the legal duties and signage required for road closures.

Council officers review each application to ensure they are safe and meet all legal requirements. 

  

The street parties may take place on a single day between the hours of 9am to 9pm on either Saturday 6, Sunday 7, or Monday 8 May. 

Residents must first express their interest in holding a street party by completing an online form by Tuesday 31 January. The Council will consider suitability and any conflict with other events before inviting applicants to complete a second-stage application. 

Leader of the Council, Councillor Baroness Teresa O’Neill of Bexley OBE, said:  

"I am pleased we can waive the fees for all the dedicated and passionate party organisers in Bexley, who I am sure will help make truly unforgettable celebrations in their neighbourhoods. Having come through a tough winter, I am sure it will be uplifting for many to have the opportunity to plan dates in our diaries that we can all look forward to.” 

The Coronation Ceremony will take place at Westminster Abbey, London, and will be conducted by the Archbishop of Canterbury.

King Charles III Coronation 6th May 2023

King Charles III and his Consort, Camilla will be crowned on Saturday 6th May. 

Details of the day are still being finalised and not released publicly, however the residents of your street might already be making plans to celebrate with a street party. We would like to know if your road is contemplating holding a street party. There were over 100 street parties in Bexley Borough for the Platinum Jubilee, with the Mayoral team visiting many of them. Can Bexley beat that number for the Coronation? We are still waiting for the Council to release clear guidance around the organising of street parties, but if you are thinking of organising one, please let us know by email bexleynw@outlook.com

Bexley Borough Neighbourhood Watch's Claire Tack and Amrik Singh attended and met one of the organisers Pritesh Bhudia. It was marked by a Welcome desk, Cinematic experience, Carnival Games & kids activities, along with Canteen & Studio. Covid checks were in place with temperature checks and hand gel santisers at entrance.

Healthwatch our engagement work - 15th and 27th October 2021

 

Thamesmead Festival - 14 August 2021

On 15th October we will be at Morrisons Welling and on 27th October we will be at Queen Mary's Hospital in the main foyer 10am until 3pm.  Future engagements will be advertised via our social media pages.

We have slowly started to increase our face to face engagements since August.  We were pleased to be invited to attend the Thamesmead Festival in August which was located at Southmere Lakes.  The sun was shining and the event was well attended.  We were able to talk to residents about their experiences with accessing their GP practice.

In September we spent a day at Queen Mary's hospital, Sidcup raising awareness of Healthwatch Bexley and talking to residents about the hospital services they had used. 

We were also invited to attend a marketplace event at the new Job Centre in Bexleyheath which was focussed around health and wellbeing.  In addition to this, we also visited Blackfen Library and Morrisons Erith.

Unfortunately, the 15th October event above has had to be cancelled. The 27th October one still stands for now.

Meanwhile, Healthwatch Bexley are running a short poll to ask if residents now feel they have received sufficient information relating to the covid-19 vaccination.  It is just two questions and takes about one minute to complete.  We are only running this until 5pm on Monday 18^th October as it is just a quick snapshot into what residents think.
