In Celebration of Ray Hudson: A Heartfelt Goodbye

A quiet hush fell over Eltham Crematorium on Thursday, February 15th, as roughly 50 friends and family gathered to bid farewell to the remarkable Ray Hudson. The air was filled with a mix of love, respect, and gratitude for a man who dedicated countless years to serving his community with unwavering dedication.

Among the mourners were fellow members of Bexley Neighbourhood Watch, including Grant Murrell, Dana Wiffen, Claire Tack, Amrik Seehra, Tony Alcorn, Ray Arnold, and Hazel Ozturk. Their presence reflected not just Ray's commitment to the cause, but the friendships and bonds he forged along the way.

A poignant touch awaited mourners outside the chapel. A stunning display, thoughtfully orchestrated by Claire, showcased the Neighbourhood Watch emblem, standing tall as a testament to Ray's years of service. It served as a silent reminder of the impact he had on his community, a symbol of the countless lives he touched.

The ceremony itself was a beautiful and fitting tribute. Each word spoken, each memory shared, painted a vivid picture of the man Ray was: kind, compassionate, and selfless. The outpouring of emotion and fond recollections left no doubt that his absence would leave a profound void.

More than just a farewell, the service was a celebration of a life well-lived. It was a reminder of the power of community spirit, the difference one person can make, and the lasting legacy left behind when we choose to dedicate ourselves to something greater than ourselves.

Ray Hudson's passing leaves a deep but cherished ache in the hearts of those who knew him. However, his memory will continue to live on, carried forward by the countless lives he touched and the spirit of community he so passionately nurtured.

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Ray Hudson on 20th January 2024, a man who tirelessly dedicated himself to improving the lives of those around him. Ray's commitment to our community spanned decades, leaving an indelible mark on Neighbourhood Watch and countless individuals.

A Pillar of Service:

From 1975 to 2001, Ray served as a Magistrate, upholding justice and fairness. His dedication to education led him to be a School Governor from 1976 to 2014, shaping young minds and fostering a love for learning. His passion for community engagement saw him lead the Lesness Residents Association from 1997 to 2016, advocating for residents' needs and improving local living conditions.

Leading the Way in Neighbourhood Watch:

Ray's impact truly unfolded with Bexley-NW. Joining the committee in 1992, he quickly rose to become Vice-Chairman in 1995 and ultimately Chairman from 2004 to 2013. He played a pivotal role in:

• Securing Bexley-NW's registered charity status in 1997.
• Establishing the RINGMASTER telephone warning system in 1998.
• Elevating Neighbourhood Watch's profile, fostering collaboration with the police, council, and local press.
• Expanding NW membership from 350 coordinators covering 14,000 homes in 2008 to 450 coordinators covering 25,000 homes in 2013.

His dedication saw him recognised with numerous awards, including a Long Service Award from Bexley-NW and a London Achievement Award presented by Mayor Boris Johnson.

An Enduring Legacy:

Even after stepping down as Chairman in 2013, Ray remained actively involved, offering guidance and support. His passing leaves a void, but his legacy lives on in the stronger, safer community he helped build. We are deeply grateful for his unwavering commitment and the countless lives he touched.

In Memoriam: Peter Faulkner, Champion of Community and Crime Fighter

The Bexley Borough Neighbourhood Watch Association (BBNWA) is deeply saddened by the passing of Peter Faulkner, a staunch advocate for community well-being and a tireless champion of justice. For many years, Peter served as the editor of the online newsletters "Kent Community Magazine" and "London Community Magazine," both of which provided invaluable resources and support to our members.

Peter's unwavering commitment to community safety shone through his relentless efforts to expose fraudsters, inform the public about current scams, and celebrate the contributions of volunteers and voluntary groups like Neighbourhood Watch. His dedication to upholding the law was evident in his coverage of police arrests and the publication of culprits' sentences, ensuring that perpetrators were held accountable for their actions.

Peter was a staunch supporter of numerous Neighbourhood Watches across Kent and London, providing them with invaluable guidance and encouragement. His passion for community empowerment and his unwavering belief in the power of collective action made him a true pillar of strength for countless individuals and organisations.

Peter's passing leaves a void that will be difficult to fill. His infectious enthusiasm, unwavering dedication, and unwavering commitment to community betterment were an inspiration to all who knew him. He will be deeply missed by the BBNWA, the communities he served, and all those who had the privilege of knowing him.

Our heartfelt condolences go out to Peter's son, Scott, and his family during this difficult time. May his legacy of community service and unwavering commitment to justice continue to inspire us all.

Sad loss of James Brokenshire MP

It’s with great sadness that we heard today about the passing of our MP (for Old Bexley & Sidcup) and Bexley Neighbourhood Watch Patron. We were aware of his fight against cancer and are devastated to hear he has lost his battle.

 

He was a superb MP who lived in his constituency and was often seen out and about talking to residents. He believed strongly in communities and would attend events, commemorations, church group meetings and was the leading figure in saving Queen Mary’s Hospital from complete closure.   His support and guidance over the years (10) enabled us (BBNWA) to move forward and expand our membership across the Borough.

 

His ability to put over a point well verbally was one of his many talents and for that reason he was often asked to speak at Residents Group meetings and Voluntary Group AGM’s, such as ours at Bexley-NW. In all the years he was our Patron he only missed a couple of our meetings.

 

I am sure anyone who met him will be deeply saddened by the news of his death, when we have a newly elected MP if he/she is as half as good as he was, they will be pretty good.

 

Our thoughts and deepest sympathy go out to his wife Cathy, their three children, family and all those that worked closely with him, he will be missed.
