Concerted action is being taken to tackle fly-tipping and help keep Bexley clean and green.
Fly-tipping items like an unwanted mattress, electrical items, or a bin bag full of rubbish causes a local nuisance and makes an area look run down.
Bexley’s Enviro-crime team have been working hard to combat fly-tipping across the borough and have recently targeted a ‘hot spot’ in Crayford.
Officers have been visiting the mini recycling site on Perry Street regularly to inspect fly-tipped waste and take enforcement action against offenders.
Since September 2021, they have issued 38 fixed penalty notices (FPN) of £150 to individuals for unauthorised waste disposal. They have also issued a further two FPN of £400 to more serious offenders.
The Enviro-crime team have continued to monitor the area and have now installed a CCTV camera with Automatic Number Plate Recognition. Footage from the cameras is being checked regularly and FPNs issued to offenders who are continuing to fly tip.
Since the camera was installed, there has been a significant reduction in the amount of fly-tipped waste at the site.
The Enviro-crime team will continue to investigate fly-tipped waste across the borough and take similar enforcement action.
Cllr Craske, Cabinet Member for Places said:
"As residents, we are all responsible for making sure that we only employ someone that has a Waste Carriers Licence. Please do not let anyone take your waste until they have proved they are legitimate and always dispose of your household waste responsibly.
We are working with our environmental services contractor, Countrystyle Recycling, to maintain the cleanliness of recycling bank sites around the borough.
Thank you to all our residents who are already doing great work to keep our borough clean and green.”
