We would like to express our deepest sorrow at the passing of Her Majesty the Queen and offer our condolences to the Royal Family. Out of respect at this time of national mourning, we will go quiet on our social media channels.

On behalf of the Council and the people of Bexley I would like to record our great sadness at the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.

The Queen ruled our country for 70 years, during a period of unprecedented change. Throughout her long life, she devoted herself to her role and played an important part in the life of the nation, both through her actions and the principles she embodied.

Those of us who were fortunate enough to be there will never forget Her Majesty’s visit to the borough in 2005, as older people remember her visit to Erith after the catastrophic floods of 1953. The latter was just one example of the way her presence brought comfort and reassurance to people at times of trouble.

The great responsibility of her role will pass to the former Prince of Wales, Charles as the new King. We wish him well and assure him of the continued loyal support of the London Borough of Bexley throughout his reign, which we hope will be long and happy."

A book of condolence will be available at Civic Offices, Watling Street, Bexleyheath in the coming days. Full details of this as well as where floral tributes can be left will shortly be available on our website.

Highlighting crime and disorder concerns  

 

We want to hear about people’s feelings of safety in the borough of Bexley. The Community Safety survey is a chance to highlight local crime and disorder issues which concern you the most – and help the Bexley Community Safety Partnership set its priorities for 2023/24.  

 

Finding out what concerns you is important to us and helps us improve the safety in the borough with partnership working and continuing to keep Bexley one of the safest boroughs in London.    

 

It’s easy to complete online at www.bexley.gov.uk/communitysafetysurvey. The survey is open from Monday 5^th September till Sunday 23^rd October 2022.  

 

Free internet access is available from all our Council run libraries. Paper copies can be requested from the Community Safety Team on 020 8303 7777 or by writing to the Community Safety Team, Civic Offices, 2 Watling Street, Bexleyheath. DA6 7AT.

Don't watch street harassment in silence - ask 'Are you Okay?'

Street harassment is on the rise and is often not an isolated incident. We know the long-term impact can harm mental health and change people’s behaviour. Victims often feel guilty, ashamed, and blame themselves.

Witnessing street harassment and not safely intervening sends the message to those experiencing it that it’s okay and society normalises it. Ongoing acceptance of street harassment contributes to a toxic culture. We want to change this, but we need your help.

Today we are launching a campaign that targets bystanders (those who witness street harassment), be those Neighbourhood Watch members or not.

 

The campaign encourages those who see someone being harassed in public to ask the victim if they are okay when they feel safe doing so. Those three little words let them know that they stand by them and that street harassment is never okay.

 

‘This simple action is a delay technique and part of the 5Ds of bystander intervention developed by Right to Be. By asking, ‘Are you okay?’ we become active bystanders and send the message that harassment is not okay. There are further actions that people can take, but our campaign focuses on the simplest step everyone can take.’ Deborah Waller, Head of Communications and Digital, Neighbourhood Watch Network'

The Bexley Community Safety Partnership (BCSP) have launched dedicated social media pages on Twitter & Facebook.  These will be used to share community safety information with everyone who lives, works, or visits the borough.

 

People following the pages will find up to date information & advice and awareness raising of various community safety issues. They will include content from partnership members including the Local Authority, Police, London Fire Brigade as well as commissioned services who help us tackle our three main priority areas of Violent Crime, Victims & Anti-Social Behaviour.

Fake Santander email

 

Lots of people online have been flagging a fake Santander mobile banking email. The email impersonates Santander’s branding and gives you a sense of urgency regarding your access to banking services, to pressure you into giving away data.
Over the past week, use of the search term ‘Santander email scams’ has increased by more than 5000%, showing the spike in people being targeted with this new scam. Know what to look out for.
